La Rondine di mare

Per lo più conosciute come rondini di mare, le Sterne comuni (Sterna hirundo) nidificano ogni anno numerosissime in Valle Baiona. Ed è particolare e interessante il connubio e la simbiosi con le postazioni che in inverno vengono usate per la caccia.

Infatti gli appostamenti fissi da caccia, localmente conosciuti come botti o tinelle (perché tradizionalmente venivano realizzate con le botti da vino), vengono coperti durante la primavera-estate, diventando isole e piattaforme ideali come siti di nidificazione per le sterne.

Da qui possono controllare meglio i predatori; le basi sono galleggianti e quindi non vengono sommerse; sono al centro dei chiari, e quindi in posizione ideale per procacciarsi il cibo, per lo più acquadellelatterini (piccoli pesci d’acqua dolce), che le sterne catturano tuffandosi in picchiata.
